Thanks for the Salmonella Peter Pan
We were some sick puppies around here this week. I was blaming my husband's chili (oops) and it turned out to be the peanut butter sandwiches we ate with it.
Consider this a P.S.A. if you eat Peter Pan peanut butter, or some Great Value peanut butter. (Apparently Great Value peanut butter is made by more than one manufacturer.)
A co-worker of my husband knew about the recall by Conagra Foods (see the recall notice here) and became suspicious when my husband was describing how sick everyone at our house was. Sure enough, the Peter Pan peanut butter we ate that night had the 2111 code beginning on each jar lid.
It has apparently affected people in several states. I can tell you it was no fun. Even though it wasn't my husband's chili, it's still his fault because he KNOWS the rules are JiIF peanut butter only.
What's next? Never mind....shhh...let's pretend I didn't ask that, okay?
Added later - the evidence:
(clickety biggety) Not only was my husband not using his super human skills to see that there was salmonella present...
(clickety biggety)
...he apparently also doesn't pay attention to expiration dates. Notice the jar on the left. Incidentally, it was the jar on the right we ate from and got sick.

Boy, you just never know any more what's safe or not. I'm a Jif person myself and eat a lot of peanut butter. I hope you all feel better soon.

Oh dear. I just read about the recall today. I hope you all recover soon!

The expiry date is not a date after which the product is bad. Merely its quality can't be guaranteed. Obviously your 2nd jar illustrates that the date didn't guarantee the absence of bacteria. Aren't I serious?! Can't seem to help it.
Take care.

UGH!! As if you need something like THIS to deal with! Hope everybody is feeling better. You probably won't have an appetite for PB for quite a while, huh?

I do pray that your family feels better soon. I think I will go check my peanut butter now.

I did have a jar way back in the cabinet 21114344--------June 09 2006. I bought it last year for hurricaine season. Boy am I glad we didn't eat that one. I almost opened it a few weeks ago but I had one that was older by a week. God works in mysterious ways, HUH!

We ate creamy Peter Pan with that code on it, nobody here became ill. No other brand tastes as good, I wonder how long it will be till they get more on the store shelves. Having PB withdrawal symptoms ;)
